Subliminal stimuli  are any sensory stimuli below an individual’s threshold for conscious perception. The Blue Sun Corporation has been able to takes strides in creating the “perfect soldier” by using functional magnetic resonance imaging which can be broadcast simultaneously with streaming video, allowing for messages or commands to be issued through quick bursts that most observers cannot process. However, these subliminal stimuli activate specific regions of the brain despite participants being unaware. Visual stimuli may be quickly flashed before an individual can process them, or flashed and then masked, thereby interrupting the processing. Audio stimuli may be played below audible volumes or masked by other stimuli. These stimuli have been progressively used within The 完美戰士 Project  carried out at an Alliance government learning facility known only as “The Academy” and its Department 7.

The effectiveness of subliminal messaging has been demonstrated to prime individual responses and stimulate mild emotional activity.Applications, however, often base themselves on the persuasiveness of the message. Importantly, research on action priming has shown that subliminal stimuli can trigger only those actions that one plans to perform anyway: an action can be triggered subliminally only if the person already has the specific intention or programming to perform this specific action. Such stimuli can nevertheless exert an effect on judgment and behavior.

The approach used in the The 完美戰士 Project provides a ten-fold increase in sensitivity in the measurement of subliminal effects compared to the previous state of the art techniques. The sensitivity increase in turn allows differences between individuals in subliminal responsiveness to be studied within lab settings and applied in the field.
